چکیده

with advanced TB may occur, given the endemic nature of TB in humans in Nigeria (10). TB cases caused by EAI strains have been found in humans in southwestern Nigeria (4; S.I. Cadmus et al., unpub. data), a fi nding that supports zoonotic transmission of this organism from humans to goats. However, different lineages of M. tuberculosis may vary in host range, and EAI genotype strains may be adapted to human and animal hosts. Conversely, human-to-animal transmission of M. tuberculosis has been reported in Nigeria relative to infection in cattle (3,4). Thus, confi rmation of TB in goats supports the possibility of risk for TB transmission between humans and animals in Nigeria. This study should be interpreted in the context of its limitations. Because the sources of the animals were unknown, we could not determine whether the organisms were imported from a neighboring country (3). In addition, we lacked information on the breed and condition of the animals. However, we have identifi ed M. tuberculosis and TB in goats in Nigeria. Additional studies of other slaughterhouses in Nigeria are needed to confi rm our results.

Human meningitis caused by Streptococcus suis: the first case report from north-eastern Italy.

We describe the first case of Streptococcus suis meningitis in the north-east of Italy. We would like to stress that Streptococcus suis should be seriously considered in the differential diagnosis of human meningitis especially in adults with a recent history of close contact with pigs or unprocessed pork meat.

Streptococcus suis Meningitis in a French Cooker: Case Report and Review

Streptococcus suis is an emerging zoonotic pathogen, increasingly reported worldwide and especially in Asia. S. suis remains rare in France but is responsible for outbreaks in Asia, causing meningitis, septicemia, endocarditis, arthritis and septic shock. Transmission of S. suis to humans may occur by close contact with sick or healthy pigs. Deafness is a common and often permanent neurological...

Identification of Streptococcus suis Meningitis through Population-Based Surveillance, Togo, 2010–2014

During 2010-2014, we enrolled 511 patients with suspected bacterial meningitis into surveillance in 2 districts of northern Togo. We identified 15 persons with Streptococcus suis infection; 10 had occupational contact with pigs, and 12 suffered neurologic sequelae. S. suis testing should be considered in rural areas of the African meningitis belt.

Streptococcus suis Meningitis with Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Streptococcus suis infection is an emerging zoonosis in Asia. The most common disease manifestation is meningitis, which is often associated with hearing loss and cochleovestibular signs. S. suis infection in humans mainly occurs among risk groups that have frequent exposure to pigs or raw pork. Here, we report a case of S. suis meningitis in a 67-yr-old pig carcass handler, who presented with ...
